What Is Firebox?

Author : dcss     Date : 09-Feb-2006

The firebox is referred to where the fire is burnt. Most pre-fabricated or factory built fireplaces are made of metal, and comes with a firebox, a specific chimney system, and all miscellaneous parts. Keep your fireplace damper closed when no fire is burning. While using the fireplace, reduce heat loss by opening dampers in the bottom of the firebox or open the nearest window slightly.

The function of Inserts is done through fireboxes. Inserts use three sides of the firebox i.e. top, bottom and backside to reduce heat. But advanced inserts reduce heat from the five sides of the firebox i.e. in addition to the three sides, two end walls are added. A smaller firebox will operate at a higher level of efficiency, even though it may require a little more attention. The complete wood burning firebox comes with cast iron grate, wire mesh screen, brick liner, heat circulating upgradeable louver panels and damper clamp.

The firebox for fireplace supports the smoke shelf, and the smoke shelf supports the chimney. If you start pulling bricks out of the firebox that somehow the smoke shelf has to be supported, otherwise they get collapsed. The Ash Pit is a cavity underneath a fireplace firebox, used as a receptacle for ashes, and accessible for cleanout by means of a cleanout door. And the Fire Back is presented at the rear wall of the firebox. The Throat Damper is located in the throat of the fireplace, just above the firebox.

Size:
Most firebox sizes and heights are adjustable by field cutting. Generally the sidewalls of the firebox are vertical. And in fact, the width of the firebox is not same from front to back. It normally gets narrow towards the rear of the firebox.

Price:
The wood burning fireboxes are available in 36", 42" and their price range starts from $150. Likewise the price range differs accordingly.
